We are delighted to be supporting Martin House Children’s Hospice as our Charity of the Year for 2021.
As a business working in the community across Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Thirsk and Settle, Continued Care aims to positively contribute to charities and voluntary groups in these areas.
Every year members of our team undertake a range of challenges and activities to raise funds for various organisations, with a particular focus on supporting a different charity each year.
Martin House is an incredibly special place providing care to babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions across around 5,000 square miles covering West, North and East Yorkshire. The charity is there for the children and their families 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering access to medical advice and support from its team of specialist doctors and care staff.
It also provides respite stays for families to spend time together, as well as supporting children in their own homes and in hospitals. For parents, visiting Martin House is often a chance to ‘be mum and dad’ instead of full-time carers, and to get a good night’s sleep, while children and young people can enjoy activities like art and music therapy, and brothers and sisters can have some ‘me time’.
But, for many months throughout last year, the Boston Spa-based hospice was unable to accommodate the planned respite stays that form a vital aspect of the care delivered to over 420 children and their families.
Over the last 12 months, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the charity has been forced to cancel its fundraising events, and has seen its income plummet.
However, despite the difficulties it faced, it has remained open for emergency and end of life care. It has also significantly increased the care it delivers to families in the community, providing practical and emotional support, as well as specialist-level palliative care from a highly-skilled team of clinical nurse specialists.
The charity’s team of specialist doctors have adapted to offer consultations by video too, reducing the pressure on the NHS and alleviating the need for hospital visits. In addition, the hospice’s bereavement counsellors have supported more families via phone and video than ever before.
Throughout 2021, Continued Care is hoping to raise £800 for the vital work that Martin House carries out in our community. We’ll be holding a series of fundraising activities, and have already started with a Christmas Jumper Day and an Easter Raffle. Coming up, we are planning a ‘Walk or Run or Swim 60k’ throughout May, so look out for more details soon.
