It’s always lovely to hear from clients who are happy with our service, and one of the things most often praised is our wonderful team.
Every day, our carers go above and beyond what’s expected of them and show incredible compassion and care for the people they support.
All our clients are members of our community and we love getting to know them, their likes and dislikes, and their aspirations for the future. Wherever they can, our carers do all they can to make their lives a little bit easier, healthier or happier.
For example, when a client said she felt isolated and was becoming depressed, our carer spoke to her about joining a day centre. The client was keen, so the carer arranged for her to attend a trial day along with her daughter. Both really enjoyed the opportunity and she’s now signed up to attend regularly.
Raising someone’s mood is an important part of our daily work. We always take the time to chat to clients, and we often find there are thing they’d like to do that would really benefit their lives.
Some of our carers take clients into town or down to the nearby shops to get their essential supplies. For others, it’s as simple as a walk around the garden with a carer’s arm to hold, looking at the flowers and enjoying the fresh air.
Caring for people losing their sight
For clients who are losing their sight, it can be tricky to get out and about as much as they did before, even if they’re otherwise well enough to do so. We care for a lady who lives in sheltered housing where there are activities on offer – but she’s unable to read the notices about them. Our carer makes a note of upcoming events and speaks to the client about any she would like to attend. She then lists the dates and times in large letters, so the lady can read them and get out to enjoy the activities every week.
Losing your sight can be very isolating, especially if you live alone. Our carers often take extra time to provide company to these clients and help them out – keeping their home free of trip hazards, going through their post with them and so on.
One carer spent time researching sight loss and discovered that yellow is often the last colour people can see. She picked a bunch of yellow flowers from the garden for a client who loves flowers and displayed them in a vase for her birthday. The client was delighted – she could see the bright yellow and make out the petals much more clearly than she expected.
The little things that make the difference
Spending time with people in their own homes means we often hear about small but irritating problems they have in their day-to-day lives. Our carers are adept at getting mobile phones and tablets fixed so clients can keep in contact with family and friends. We’ve also been known to put up wall brackets for televisions, fill bird feeders, re-tune TVs, collect apples from trees in the garden and much more.
We often make contact with local businesses and charities when clients need their help, too. Over the last couple of years, we’ve replaced worn-out sofas, had new carpets installed, and provided fire-retardant bedding and equipment to make clients’ homes safer for them.
A few months ago, we began caring for an elderly lady who spoke no English. While we could communicate with her family, our carer spent time learning a few phrases in Cantonese so she could speak directly to the client. The first time she said “good morning” to her, the lady was absolutely delighted.
It’s a cliché, but it really is the little things that make the biggest difference to people’s lives. We’re in a privileged position to be able to help people every day and to see the immediate impact of that support: a happy smile, a better mood, and a client able to live more independently in their own home.
