As the colder weather sets in, we’ve compiled some information to help you keep safe and well this winter.
How to avoid slips and falls
Falls can cause injuries and distress, and tend to increase during winter when conditions are icy and wet. You can help reduce your risk of slipping or falling by:
• Be vigilant for icy paths or wet surfaces
• Check that mobility aids are in good condition and used correctly
• Make sure footwear fits well and is non-slip and appropriate for the weather
• Report any changes in mobility or balance to one of our carers or managers. We can then assess your needs and refer you to the appropriate services
• Try to stay indoors during particularly cold weather, and go outside in the middle of the day when the temperature is at its highest
Staying warm in winter
When it gets really cold, it can be difficult to keep yourself warm, but following these tips can help keep you cosy:
• Keep the curtains open during the day to let the sun’s warmth in
• Eat warming foods such as soups and stews
• Drink hot drinks
• Keep doors shut and use draught excluders
• Wear plenty of layers, thick socks and slippers, and even a hat and gloves
• Use a hot water bottle and extra blankets
• If you have laminate or wooden floors, put rugs down to make them cosier
Eating well
More than ever, winter is a time when it’s vital to make sure you are eating well. We would advise the following:
• Try to have at least one nourishing, hot meal a day
• Include a range of foods in your diet
• Eat some fresh, frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables every day
• Make sure you always have the basics such as bread and milk
• Eating something is better than eating nothing at all
Winter payments
You may be eligible for financial support through the winter under various schemes, such as the Winter Fuel Payment, a one-off payment of up to £300 towards your winter heating costs. You may also be able to receive a Cold Weather Payment of £25 per seven-day period of cold weather if you receive certain benefits. Additionally, if you get specific benefits, you may qualify for a Warm Home Discount of £150 off your electricity bill. To find out more and check if you are eligible, visit the Government website.
Heating tips to save money
As well as ensuring you are receiving any winter payments you are entitled to, there are other things you can do to help save money during winter.
• Turning your thermostat down by just one degree should still keep you warm and can save a typical home an average of £115 a year
• Reduce the flow temperature on your combi boiler
• Decrease the temperature your hot water is heated to
• Insulate your hot water cylinder
• Turn off radiators in rooms you don’t use and bleed the ones you do
• Get your boiler serviced
• Consider getting your home insulated to save on bills in the long run
