Social get-togethers and Christmas fun: Our latest news

The last few months of the year are always a busy time, and as Christmas draws closer there’s also the chance to join in the festivities too. Read on for our final round-up of 2025.

Carers of the Month

Congratulations to our recent Carers of the Month, who are:

August: Bridget, whose commitment, adaptability and genuine care for others make her an exceptional carer and truly deserving of this recognition.
September: Anureet and Rahat, twin sisters who were jointly nominated in recognition of their outstanding consistency, dedication and commitment to providing high-quality care.
October: Phil, who is always polite, positive, supportive, and known for his genuine kindness and professional attitude – embodying our values of teamwork and compassion.

Great British Care Awards

We were delighted to once again have a number of our Continued Care team shortlisted in the prestigious Great British Care Awards.

We all had a fantastic evening celebrating at the regional finals in Leeds on Friday, November 7th, where six members of our staff were finalists!

Allgar Ziyanera won the Home Care Worker Award while Amanda Ramsay won the Home Care Registered Manager Award and Maria Gibson was highly commended in the Home Care Co-Ordinator category.

Our other amazing finalists were Eugenia Tay for the Home Care Newcomer Award, Sue Crawford and Matt Betts in the Home Care Team category, and Nichola Noble for the Unpaid Carer Award.

Allgar and Amanda will now go forward to the national finals in February next year.

The awards are a wonderful celebration of the hard work and dedication of all the amazing people who work in the care sector, so it’s always great to see our fantastic team receive such well-deserved recognition. It’s particularly meaningful because all the nominees are put forward by their colleagues and the people they look after.

We are so proud of our finalists, winners and, indeed, all our Continued Care staff who show kindness and dedication to providing the very best care possible.

Retirement wishes

Wishing Christine Middleton a very happy retirement! Chris is exceptionally kind and person-centred and has been an invaluable part of our care team, always going over and above and building close relationships with the people she cares for.

Chris has worked in care for a long time and joined Continued Care in 2022. She won the Dignity in Care Award at the Great British Care Awards for Yorkshire & The Humber (she is shown in the picture here receiving her award) and was a runner-up in the national finals.

She will be missed by everyone and leaves with our warmest wishes for a long and happy retirement.

Pay as you can café

Did you know that you can have coffee and cake or a hot lunch every Wednesday at St Wilfrid’s Church in Harrogate?

Local food charity Resurrected Bites runs a pay-as-you-can café in the parish hall from 10am to 2pm. Everyone is welcome, and last orders are at 1.15pm. See the St Wilfrid’s Facebook page for more details.

Social Day Clubs

Come and try out our Social Day Clubs with a free taster session!

You’ll find a warm and friendly place where you can: • Socialise and make new friends • Enjoy a hot lunch and a pack-up tea and juice • Access practical services such as a hair cut and manicure • Participate in exercise and activities such as baking and painting

The clubs run weekly in Harrogate and are open to all adults, with family / friend carers welcome to attend too. You can book a place for yourself or someone you know. Funding towards regular attendance at the club may be available to you as part of your plan of care from North Yorkshire Council – this would need to be assessed to see if you meet this need and a referral can be made.

Why not come along and see what you think? You will be made very welcome, and we can arrange transport there and back for you free of charge. To find out more about our Social Day Clubs, please call us on 01423 871 003.

Christmas card competition winner

We recently invited our community to get creative and design our official Continued Care Christmas Card. And the winner is… Ira, whose card is pictured here. Well done to Ira and thank you to everyone who took the time to send in an entry. All the designs were fantastic!

Our services over Christmas

A reminder that our services will run as normal during the Christmas period. Please note that for Christmas bank holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day) the service will run as usual, but there will be an additional enhanced charge for these days at double the normal rate.

Emollients and fire safety

Did you know that clothing with dried-on emollients can catch fire easily?

Emollients are used to treat dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, as well as being used on pressure sores. They are available over the counter or by prescription as lotions, sprays, creams, ointments, bath oils and soap substitutes. They may be water-based, contain paraffin or natural oils.

Emollients are not flammable in themselves, but when used regularly on large areas of the body, they can dry and leave a flammable residue on clothing, bedding and bandages/dressings. This can cause a fire if ignited by a heat source such as a dropped lit cigarette, match or lighter, a gas fire, open fire or heater, a candle flame, or a cooker hob.

We are here to advise you about using your emollients safely and how to lower the risk of a fire. We can also book and support you with free fire assessments for your home which are free of charge.

Please call us on 01423 871 003 to find out more about how we can help.
